A little about the Alexander Technique
Alexander Technique is not therapy but specialised teaching. It teaches us how to be more incharge of our ways of reacting, in simple or very complex activities/
It is taught at many leading schools of Music Drama and Dance, such as Trinity Laban Conservatoire, Guildhall School of Music and Drama, the Royal Academy of Music and Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) it is somtimes called 'the actor's secret'!
It's also taught privately in one to one lessons or in small groups.
It can help everyone in the most unexpected ways: teaching self-management - to take time when needed encouraging ease and our inherent natural springiness.
Lessons can be very effective in solving issues of chronic pain, such as back pain, neck pain and general stuffness and discomfort.
Lessons often improve your appearance and confidence, building self-esteem as a by-product.
It's a fabulous journey of self-discovery - leading over time to emotional clarity, joy in being and skill in thinking.
It's mainly preventive in essence - addressing ingrained habits of movement and thought - not simply adding exercises that can make our overall functioning worse rather than better. Lessons can also be of great benefit emotionally as well as physically.
Applying the principles in everyday life allows us to be more effective.
Lessons can be of profound help in freeing the 'natural' voice if you are a singer or public speaker and can also be invaluable in enhancing sporting and musical skill - showing us how to achieve more by doing less……
Especially important in children's development they can help the upcoming generations prevent poor movement habits (often considered normal!) and other behavioural maladjustments forming. Indeed, many of the ‘stress’ problems that adults suffer as they get older can often be traced back to habits laid down during formative years. The answers lie NOT in gyms but in an understanding of the nature of physical balance and our habitual reactions in daily life.
Alexander lessons help us recognize and change these less than useful habits, return to more natural movement, suffer less the effects of 'stress' and enjoy more balance in life. It's entirely up to you how far you take this process - it can just help you feel more comfortabkle in your body or start the process of a deep change in attitude and self - development.
